June already … I hope you’ve taken action for a while already in order to get in summer-shape?

If not, it’s actually not too late! Jon Benson has this crazy-@$$ thing called Radical Fat Loss Blueprint. It claims 21 pounds of fat off in 21 days, and that’s an average number. The only catch is that you must have a nutrition plan for the “after” so that he is certain you will not 1) keep doing this system for more than 3 weeks straight, and 2) not go back to your bad old ways and gain it all back. Oh, and you should get the supplement kit he offers as well (not his stuff, but he’s negotiated a great deal with the distributors and you get everything in one package). It’s top-quality, high-grade stuff that he uses himself.

The best “after” plan is the one Lewis and I have been using for the past 18-20 months now, Every Other Day Diet (EODD) www.myeveryotherdaydiet.com because it eliminates the need for calorie-counting, and it’s literally allowing a treat every 2-3 days! Sound nuts? It is, but good nuts!

Take this week. I was a bit bloated after the past weekend, and did two days of the “burn days” on the EODD plan, then Wednesday I had some lasagna for lunch, whole wheat bread with butter while I waited for supper and a small sundae without topping for dessert. Thursday morning I was in the innermost hole in my belt, 3 notches in from Monday. I was leaner on Thursday morning than I was on Wednesday morning, even with the feed-day foods I’d had. Or rather: because of that food.

Your body will react to a refeed-day by releasing more bodyfat than if you keep eating low-calories all week. The ingenious part of EODD is that you don’t have to worry about how or when to cycle, it’s all planned for you in 4 different plans – one of them is bound to suit you and your lifestyle! We usually stay with Lifestyle 1 and/or 2, on occasion I’ll switch to the Extreme Plan; but if you are new to this, start with the Primer Plan which is literally every other day with a treat! Seriously.

Training wise we’re also doing good. We get up at 4:30, I hit the gym for my 7 Minute Musle training while Lew has his morning coffee, he then comes downstairs to do his CTF- program or cardio depending on the weekday, while I finish my workout with 9 minutes of cardio. After supper, we take the dogs for a walk for about 30 minutes. This still leaves us time to take a nap after work, check e-mails and forum activities, cook, and catch 1 to 1˝ hours of TV just to change mental input a little.

A word of warning to anyone using the P90X pull-up/ chin-up bar: Lewis was doing his chin-ups this week, first set went fine, second set … all I heard was a crash and a bang followed by a yell. The bar, which is lodged behind the door jamb on the other side of the wall from where you stand to do the pull-ups, somehow came un-lodged! It’s never done it before, there was no logical explanation, just a week of pain and could have been worse had he done pull-ups with his legs bent back at the knee rather than chin-ups with his legs stretched forwards at the hips. As it was, he landed on his glutes, otherwise he’d have fallen on his knees with his whole weight from a good height! Needless to say, we’re not using it for a while!

Losing Fat is Like Draining a Swimming Pool...Why Spot Reduction Just Doesn't Hold Water

The bad news is simply training that area to death won't
accomplish it! Learn why spot reduction doesn't work
and what you CAN actually do about those problem areas.


 

"How can I lose my gut?"

"How do I stop my arms from flapping in the wind?"

"How can I get rid of this stomach fat?"

"How do I lose just the fat on my thighs?"

These are questions I hear regularly...the bottom-line question being asked is "how can I lose fat from one specific area?"

And I'm sorry to say, the quick answer is...

"You can't."

But don't panic! Just because you can't spot-reduce from one specific area doesn't mean you'll never lose that fat! It just means you have to look at things a bit differently when it comes to fat loss.

THAT is where the pool I mentioned comes in.

I would love to give credit to the person who I burgled this analogy from (if you're reading this, let me know!) but think of your bodyfat stores as a pool...

When you fill up a pool (i.e. bodyfat stores), the deep end fills up first, right? Of course! It's the deep end.

Well, the same thing happens in your body. Think of your stomach as the deep end. When you start putting on fat, your deep end starts filling up first.

So you're happily swimming along until one day you realize your swimming pool is too full and it's time to drain some water from the pool (i.e. lose some fat).

To spot reduce and lose that fat from the "deep end," you'd have to drain the deep end first. Not gonna happen. If you can think of a way to drain just the deep end of a pool, I'd like to know it!

This is what happens with fat loss. The stuff you put on LAST is the stuff that comes off FIRST. And generally speaking, the stuff you put on FIRST (i.e. problem areas like the gut and thighs) is the stuff that comes off LAST (because it's the deep end of the pool).

So what's the strategy?

You're going to have to drain more of the pool to get that deep end down.

In fat-loss terms this means you're going to have to lose fat from all over your body before the stuff you REALLY want to get rid of comes off.

I know...that's probably the LAST thing you wanted to hear but it's the unvarnished truth.

I'm afraid doing ten thousand crunches every morning won't get you the ripped six-pack you're looking for. And doing ten thousand leg-lifts (no matter how much you feel the burn) won't pull that fat from your thighs. It'll tighten up the muscles underneath that fat, but you won't really SEE much of a difference.

When the body switches on fat burning, it does so on a systemic basis. Going to back to the pool analogy, this would be like having multiple drains all draining water from the pool. The water level goes down evenly when you drain a pool, no matter how many drains you've got or where the drains are draining from.

So when you lose fat, even if you're exercising the heck out of your abs by doing ten thousand crunches, you could be pulling fat from your legs for fuel.

The REAL secret about spot reduction is that you can't pick your spots.

Your body picks the spots for you. Reducing ALL your spots is the only way to spot reduce.

So now that I've crushed your dreams about losing fat from just your stomach or thighs, I want to tell you that overall fat loss is not as hard as you might think!

Even small changes in your training and eating can really make a big difference in draining your fat pool. You don't have to go on a crash diet or train 3 hours a day to get results.

Eating better and training as little as 30 minutes, 3 times a week can get you moving in the right direction.

Weight Loss Programs - Finding A Weight Loss Program That Works

If you're currently on the search for weight loss programs, you'll need to consider a variety of things. All weight loss programs are not created equally; some will have a much higher rate of success than others.

Knowing exactly what to look for when searching for weight loss exercise programs will help enable you to make a decision that will get you the results you're looking for.

First, if you're like many people, you probably want a free weight loss program. The thing to keep in mind though is that these are free for a reason. They are targeted towards the general public and as such, give such broad suggestions that while it may work for one person, it will not work for you. For example, if you are a 200 pound man and the free weight loss programs you are finding are more geared towards a 140 pound woman; you can see why this would obviously be problematic.

The first thing to ask yourself when you see a weight loss diet program is how personalized is it. I'm sure you've heard the saying that "General programs produce general results," which is very true. The more personalized and targeted the solution is to your individual situation, the higher your chance of consistent weight loss.

Next, ask whether it allows for enough calories to keep you from completely starving. While it may be tempting to try a very low calorie approach to get the weight loss process over and done with, usually these end up backfiring on you, leaving you gaining more weight back after you go off them than you had when you first started. Your goal is to burn the fat, not starve the fat and the majority of weight loss programs force your metabolism to shut down which leads to muscle loss - a doubled edged sword contributing to greater fat storage on your body.

Another component that you'll want to factor in is exercise. A good weight loss exercise program will combine both cardiovascular training along with weight training. Those weight loss exercise programs that have you doing hours of cardio on end are not going to be all that beneficial at retaining your lean muscle tissue mass, nor time efficiency. Since, your lean muscle tissue is what keeps your metabolism the highest; it's what you really want to focus on the most. Neglecting this aspect of your workout is a huge mistake and does not maximize the 24 hours in a day you have to burn fat.

Finally, keep in mind that any weight loss program you go on you should be maintainable in the long run. A program that you're only able to maintain in the very short term is likely to not be overly beneficial as if lifestyle changes are not made with regards to how you're eating; chances are that the weight will be back at some point in the near future. Your ultimate goal is a lifestyle change, not a temporary change.

Is Chocolate better than Broccoli?

No , that is not a trick question.

Better smelling? Better tasting? Better for you? There are so many ways to ask this question and so many ways to answer it.

No matter how you ask it, which one do you think most people would honestly prefer? You guessed it. Unless you are some sort of alien, I think you would agree that chocolate tastes better than broccoli. Yes, I am human, so I would have to agree too. I could probably dip my dirty gym sock in chocolate and enjoy its chocolaty goodness!

I bet that if I gave you a nutrition test right now, you would most likely score a B+ (or an A after this e-course). Did you really not know that broccoli was good for you? So, if we all know what the right answers are, the question really is: why are so many people still battling their weight?

The challenge is when you have to make the decision between chocolate and broccoli (I suppose you could just dip your veggies in chocolate and resolve the whole problem). All kidding aside, how about you stop making your nutrition choices an EITHER/OR experience and stop telling yourself there are things you CAN'T eat? How about knowing that you can eat just about everything! (Except McDonald's. I can't make peace with that).

Here's the honest truth. I eat chocolate and I drink wine. I love them both (I know what you are thinking... even chocolate?) and there is no reason I should give them up forever. However, I will tell you how I pull this off and still stay lean year round and feeling great. Most of my meals are made with healthy delicious foods and we all know there are plenty to choose from. Then, when the time is right I can have things like freshly baked peach cobbler with vanilla ice-cream (as I often order when I'm out and share with my husband).

I am now at my ideal weight and I stay this way through smart meal planning, an effective workout program and periodic indulgences.

I know you want to look and feel great and also treat yourself to the foods you love without "giving" anything up. The following steps are exactly how you can get to your ideal weight and keep it off permanently:
