10 Signs You May Be Addicted to Painkillers

10 Signs You May Be Addicted to Painkillers
By Jesse Cannone, CFT, CPRS

Each year, more than 2 million Americans are given powerful prescription painkillers that contain opiods (sometimes called narcotics) for the relief of pain and discomfort brought on by injury, surgery, menstrual cramps, and even headaches. But a growing number of people taking these medications are becoming addicted to them. And it’s not hard to understand why.

Drugs such as Vicodin, Percocet, and Methadone block pain all the way from the nerve endings in the skin to the spinal cord to the brain. Once these drugs reach the brain, they open the floodgates for the chemical dopamine, which triggers feelings of well-being. Dopamine, in effect, rewires the brain to become accustomed to those pleasant feelings. So when you stop taking the pain-killer, your body will still have a strong craving for the dopamine. This is what makes it so hard to quit. Symptoms of withdrawal can include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes with goose bumps (which is the origin of the term "cold turkey"), and involuntary leg movements. Better to avoid getting hooked in the first place.

Chemical dependency can happen to anyone, and it can easily sneak up on you. Here are 10 things you should look out for if you or someone you know is currently taking prescription painkillers:

1. An increase in usage
As time goes by, the effects of the initial dose will lessen, prompting a desire for stronger or more frequent doses of the prescribed medication. This is a clear indication that whatever amount they have been taking is no longer providing the same level of relief.

2. Personality changes
Changes in a person’s normal behavior can be a sign of dependency. Shifts in energy, mood, and concentration may occur as every day responsibilities become secondary to the need for the relief the prescription provides.

3. Withdrawing socially
This is one of the clearest signs of a dependency problem. Spending more time alone and away from friends and family and social gatherings is a cause for concern.

4. Continuing meds too long
Extending the prescription beyond the initial period, especially after the condition has improved, can be the beginning of an endless cycle. The patient may even believe he or she is still in pain and simply needs to stay on the meds for a few more weeks or months. He or she might even express anger toward a doctor who questions the need to renew the prescription.

5. Too much time spent getting meds
There are no lengths to which a chemically dependent person will not go to obtain the drugs they think they need. This can become an all-consuming obsession, including traveling long distances and visiting many doctors. When getting the drugs seems to be the number one priority, the situation is getting out of hand.

6. Habits and appearance changes
A deterioration in physical appearance and grooming—including not bathing or shaving regularly—is a common result of drug addiction. There may be a general look of unhealthiness, such as persistent coughing and red eyes. Sleeping and eating patterns often become irregular.

7. Failure to meet responsibilities
Sudden changes in work or school attendance and a decline in quality of work or grades are common, as well as forgetting to pay bills and missing appointments.

8. Becoming oversensitive
One consequence of using potent drugs is that the body’s response to any sort of stimulation is heightened. For example, a person may have an overly emotional reaction to traffic noise or bright lights—possibly including hallucinations.

9. Forgetfulness and blacking out
A person who is suffering from chemical dependency will forget things that have happened and may even experience memory gaps of several hours.

10. Denial and becoming defensive
Presented with even a hint that they may be addicted, those hooked on drugs will vehemently deny it. The harder you push, the more defensive they are like to get. They might even react to simple questions with an angry outburst.

Additional signs of chemical dependency include an inability to relax or have fun, talking incoherently or making inappropriate remarks, and expressing feelings of exhaustion, depression, and hopelessness.

Remember that painkillers are a blessing that can turn into a curse. And that it is a lot easier to avoid becoming addicted than it is to recover from drug addiction. As long as you follow your doctor’s instructions (and you have others around you to make sure you do), these prescription medications will what they were designed to do—and nothing more.

Laugh Your Way to Pain Relief

Laugh Your Way to Pain Relief

By Steven Hefferon, CMT, PTA, CPRS

A man rushed into a veterinarian’s office carrying his limp, lifeless dog. The vet examined the animal and told the man the dog was dead. The man asked if there was any way the doctor could revive the dog. The doctor left the room and returned with a cat, who sniffed the dog from head to tail then looked up at the vet and meowed.

“Sorry,” said the doctor. “There’s nothing I can do.”

“Thanks for trying,” said the man with a sigh. “How much do I owe you?”

“Three hundred and fifty dollars,” replied the doctor.

“Three hundred and fifty dollars! Just to tell me my dog is dead?”

“Well,” said the doctor, “it was $50 for the office visit. The other $300 is for the CAT scan.”

Whether the above joke made you laugh or groan, it lightened your mood. And if you had been in pain, many scientists agree, it would have eased the hurt—at least temporarily.

A fresh take on an old idea

The notion that laughter is good for the body has been around for thousands of years—certainly as far back as the Old Testament. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Seventeenth century English physician Dr. Thomas Sydenham remarked, “The arrival of a good clown exercises more beneficial influence upon the health of a town than of twenty asses laden with drugs.” Or as Groucho Marx put it, “A clown is like aspirin, only he works twice as fast.”

How do you get a sweet 80-year-old lady to say the F word? Get another sweet little 80-year-old lady to yell *BINGO*!

The value of laughter in helping to relieve pain began to attract significant attention in the 1980s when Dr. Norman Cousins in his book Anatomy of an Illness described how watching Marx Brother movies and reading humorous books and articles helped him recover from a life-threatening tissue disease.

Cousins made it a point to enjoy a hearty belly laugh several times a day. He claimed that a few minutes of laughter gave him an hour or more of pain-free sleep. As a result, many pain centers around the country began to use humor therapy to reduce the level of pain medication needed by patients.

There was even a movie made about real-life doctor Patch Adams, a physician who was totally committed to making his patients laugh as an essential part of his treatment.

How does laughter reduce pain?

Clinical staff consistently note that the primary benefit of humor therapy is that it serves as a diversionary tactic—that is, it takes a patient’s mind off the pain.

A study published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing reported that patients who were told one-liners after surgery and before painful medication was administered perceived less pain when compared to patients who didn’t get a dose of humor as part of their therapy.

Why don’t bunnies make noise when they have sex? Because they have cotton balls.

Another study, this one published in the Journal of Applied Behavioral Analysis, found that young girls with burns who were shown cartoons during very painful hydrotherapy said they felt less pain than similar patients who were not exposed to cartoons during the same procedure.

A second theory of how laughter helps relieve pain is that it triggers the release of endorphins, the chemicals in the brain that can make us feel good.

Natural healing

Around the same time that the Cousins book appeared, the departing editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Franz Ingelfinger, noted that 85 percent of all human illnesses are curable by the body’s own healing system. Building a positive focus in your life—which includes a regular dose of laughter—can play a key role in supporting the body’s ability to do just that.

Laughing, in fact, has been shown to increase the body’s natural killer cells and T-cells, which are types of cells that attack foreign material in our bodies. Laughter also keeps away negative emotions such as anxiety and depression, which tend to weaken the immune system.

Why are they called "hemorrhoids". They should be called "asteroids"?

Research on stress-related hormones and humor has shown that laughter reduces at least four of the hormones associated with the stress response, including epinephrine, cortisol, dopac, and growth hormone.

Some studies have indicated that laughter improves lung capacity and with improved lung capacity come improved oxygen levels in the blood, thereby alleviating ischemic pain or pain do to lack of oxygen-rich blood.

Internal jogging

According to Dr. William Fry from Stanford University, one minute of laughter is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine. Laughter is a kind of “internal jogging” that exercises our heart and reduces blood pressure in the same way as does standard aerobic exercise. This kind of laughter exercise is well suited to sedentary people and those who are confined to a bed or wheelchair.

What did One saggy boob say to the other saggy boob? If we drop any lower people are gonna think we are nuts!

If you keep the Huh Huh Huh - going for long periods of time and increase the number of times you do it while at the same time shrugging your upper body you will keep the oxygen flowing to the cells that need it and you will be giving what you body need to begin to reduce your pain and speed healing.

And here’s a final fascinating fact: Researchers at St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center in Minnesota say that tears of laughter remove toxic substances that normally build up during periods of emotional stress…So, whether you prefer Dirty jokes, Redneck jokes or Funny Photos the Internet has provide us with an unlimited number of resources not to mention the ton of emails that you get from your friends that they think are funny and they just have to send to you for some reason thinking that you have the time to read it and that you have nothing else to do. Maybe just read on a week and see how you feel.

If you do read a joke or see a funny photo and it does put a smile on your face learn to keep that smile going longer and feel how good you feel when you keep your head up and a smile on your face.

Life will always be full of challenges but we should always be driven to seek those thing that give us Joy and Piece, so if a joke can give you 30 seconds of joy, read a joke and keep smiling.

I know I’m not alone when I say I HATE winter. I’m no fan of cold
weather but worse than the weather is, the cold’s and flu’s.

Every where you turn someone is coughing, sniffling, sneezing
or worse. I’m actually at Dulles airport right now as I write this and
there’s a whole bunch of "sickies" getting ready to spread their
germs when we board… yuck!

Anyway, you don’t need to become one of em.

Here are just of the things you can do to make your immune
system practically cold and flu proof:

1. Sleep better and maybe more

Most people, myself included, typically don’t sleep enough and
when your body doesn’t have enough time to rebuild itself, you
are almost asking to get sick.

So make sure you are not only sleeping enough, but getting
enough, deep, quality sleep.

You can find 7 ways to improve your sleep here

2. Eat enough… of the right stuff

Most people underestimate the effect nutrition has on the body
and immune system. Start eating better, meaning more organic,
whole foods like fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, fish and
meat. Notice I didn’t say pretzels, chips, crackers, soy burgers
or none of that other junk posing as "healthy choices".

3. Avoid / limit drastic temperature changes

One of the biggest strains on the immune system is when the
body is forced to adjust to big changes in temperature and this
is why so many people get sick during the winter months.

If you are outside and it’s 30 degrees, don’t have your heat up
to 80 degrees in your house. The more you can limit this the
better.

4. Wash your hands… and everything else

It absolutely amazes me the number of people, men and women
who will go to the bathroom and NOT wash their hands… even
after a #2…. gross! Come one people, when you don’t wash your
hands you do more than damage your own health, you get all
the rest of us sick!

5. Kill the germs

It’s inevitable that viruses and bacteria get into your body, but
if your immune system is strong, it will kill the germs.

One of the best things you can do to kill off viruses is to boost
the amount of proteolytic enzymes in your body. One of the
things these special enzymes do is attack and kills viruses.

And it’s no surprise that people who are taking Lifezyme Plus
experience much fewer cold’s and flu’s than the average joe.

Not only does it reduce inflammation and pain, but it also
strengthens the immune system and helps fight off those
nasty bugs. You can learn more about Lifezyme Plus here

Here’s what people are saying about Lifezyme Plus:

hi jessie,

taking three tablets a day and seems to be making my pain a lot
less not taking medication only lifezyme… what a blessing

I was trying to locate a spot on your web to tell you how wonderful
your product is and how it has changed my life. Here’s my story:

In 1991 I was diagnosised with a Chordoma tumor in L3. I had
several experimental surgeries to excise the tumor. I was left with
a bone strut that collasped into my spinal canal and left me with
spinal stenosis and a weak right leg and drop foot.

Because of all this trauma to my back, spine, and left leg, I now
have bulging disk L4 and L5. As a result of this, I developed
scaitica. I was in pain for 1 and 1/2 years. I tried everything;
chiropractor, epidural injections, physical therapy, pain medicines,
massages, ect. I was desperate and thats when I found your website.

I decided to try your product Lifezyme Plus and after 3 weeks that
pain was gone. I continue to take LP and my life is so much sweeter.
Thank you for your product. I never thought in my wildest dreams
that I would ever feel good again but I do!

Hi Jesse
I started taking the Lifezyme a week ago and have seen a slow but steady improvement in pain and movement. The mornings are the worst for me, even though I have a tempurpedic bed. But the recovery in the mornings is coming quicker each day, to where I can bend over wth little
discomfort fairly early in the day, whereas before, the stiffness and
pain would last throughout the day with little improvement. I have
prayed to God for help, and I believe He directed me to you guys. God
bless you, and I will check in periodically.
Mike

So whatchya waiting for?

Grab some Lifezyme Plus right now and not only will you reduce
pain, inflammation and stiffness, but you’ll also make it so you are
much less likely to catch a bug.

Wishing you happiness, health and warmth :)

After viewing The Healthy Back Institute’s Lose The Back Pain System, all I can say is that it’s revolutionary in the treatment and curing of back pain and sciatica.  This team of doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists and personal trainers put together a completed package.

The system teaches you how to self-asses your specific conditions and how to correct it.  The corrective exercises and stretches are performed by the individuals as demonstrated in the 2 DVD’s and Manual.  One of the neatest aspects of this self assesment is that it takes away the guessing.  The very first step involves having someone take pictures of your posture in several different specified positions and angles.  This is used in determining which stretches and exercises should be performed to CORRECT the problem.

That is the whole intention of this system; TO CORRECT.  Most back pain is caused by muscle imbalances which lead to compensation therefore pain.  The exercises and stretches that you will perform, are intended to correct those imbalances to get rid of your pain.

There are also two CD’s which outline how to get the best results out of the system, strategies to reduce and manage your pain, and condition specific recommendations.

What most doctors recommend when you tell them you have back pain is to take addictive muscle relaxers and pain killers.  And in some cases surgery, which from most of the post-surgery patients i’ve seen, most haven’t had relief.  Often times they just traded one problem for another.

Therefore, it is my recommendation that anyone with back pain or Sciatica try the Lose The Back Pain system by The Healthy Back Institute.  It is a natural way of correcting your condition and becoming pain free.

When To Workout + When To Eat?

By Jesse Cannone

Do you workout in the morning?

Do you who workout in the morning do so on an empty stomach?

I talk to so many people who exercise in the morning on an empty stomach… many of them do so because they heard it is more effective at burning fat.

Are you one of those people?

If so, I’m sorry for what I’m about to say.

Exercising on an empty stomach is the absolute worst thing you could do besides go an the Atkins diet! It’s like taking a road trip without any gas in your car!

NEVER exercise on an empty stom-ach… NEVER! Sorry…

it’s just very important that you don’t do it. Not only is not effective at bur-ning off body fat, it’s also a huge negative!

When you exercise on an empty sto-mach you give your body only 3 choices for fuel: muscle tissue, muscle glycogen (stored muscle energy), and body fat…

Which one do you think it’s going to use?

Muscle tissue!

Body fat is the last thing your body wants to use for energy…

it’s saving it incase you have to go very long periods with out food.

So if you want to burn fat, you have to feed your body before you work it. You don’t bu-rn much fat while your exercising…

you burn it later while your metabolism is elevated because you have been strength training progressively, performing occasional Level 3 (high intensity) cardio workouts, and most importantly, you’ve stabilized your blood sugar to make it easier to burn fat and less likely to add more!

The only exception to this is easy exercise…

Obviously you can do easy exercise or activity on an empty stomach but to me, that doesn’t count as exercise and it certainly doesn’t help when trying to burn fat!

So do you see the importance of feeding your body before you ask it to perform for you?

I hope so because it is critical to your success!

Well, I hope you understand the importance of feeding your body. If you have any question please feel free to send them to info@guaranteed-weightloss.com and I’ll do my best to try and answer them…

But please know that I do get hundreds of emails each day so please be patient :)
