Hi lewis!

Last year at a seminar, I had a roommate who was also a fitness trainer and well respected in the industry.

Jon and I had talked a few times in the past and I’ve always been a fan of his work.

Then one night after a couple of beers, he began telling me about his latest "project"…

You see, he’d been working on a new bodybuilding program for about

2.5 years that he was designing for those who are "too busy" to workout.

He’d been researching some old training manuals from the 50’s, and 60’s (talk about "Old School"!) and had been experimenting with workouts as short as…

…get this…

…7 MINUTES!

Well, last week he sent me a preview copy of the program to check out and possibly promote to my subscribers.

Now, you KNOW I don’t promote "just anything" (and I get asked EVERY WEEK to help someone out).

And the one thing I tell ALL program developers is that I don’t hold anything back…I lay it out as I see it!

Well, I finally got through the program (it’s actually a short read…but it’s very different so it takes a while to digest).

Since you’re probably going to be hearing a lot about this over the next week, I thought I’d give you my take on it…

The bottom line of the program is that you can stimulate both strength and mass gains by increasing the intensity of your workouts for shorter periods.

In this case…your "beginner" workout lasts just 7 MINUTES TOTAL!

There was actually a lot of research done on this in the "old days"

and the programs worked especially well for "older" trainees who took part in the numerous studies.

(Jon actually cites over 100 research studies to support his program’s effectiveness.)

Let me give you the points that stuck out the most for me…

>>> 1.  One of the core philosophies is the law of "progressive resistance" where each week you either add weight or repetitions to trigger you muscles to adapt.

Those who know me, know that I’m NOT a big fan of "progressive resistance".

But nearly every other "expert" (I said "NEARLY!) follows this basic philosophy and stands by it.

I’ll defend this as a myth until I die, but in the context of this program, I can see why it was added because the sessions ARE very short.

>>> 2.  The workouts I tested WERE very intense!

VERY fast paced and even though they’re short, they will kick your ass in some cases.

Fortunately, there’s an element of the program that uses "creative rest periods" that let you set your own pace so you don’t leave in an ambulance.

In any case, ANYONE can follow these workouts whether you’re young or old, beginner or advanced.

>>> 3.  One of John’s basic premises is that you need to stimulate as many muscle fibers as possible.

As those of you who just purchased my "Advanced Mass Building" program know, this is my latest "soapbox rant".

I was glad to see Jon echo my beliefs and the methods he uses DO in fact fall in line with how I teach my clients to accomplish this.

Jon goes into his methods in HOW he does this in his manual.

Do I recommend "7-Minute Muscle"?

Yes and No…

Let me explain…

Jon’s methods are well researched and very intriguing.  (As I said…he cites over 100 references for his project!)

>>> I DON’T recommend this program if…

…you’re a total "gym junkie" and the thought of a 7-minute workout is the equivalent of just 30 seconds of "great sex".

You’ll be in and out of the gym in no time and for some, that just doesn’t cut it.

I personally don’t always feel like working out, but when I force myself to get to the gym, I feel like sticking around (kind of like sex after 40 ;-)

>>> I DO recommend this program if…

* You’re someone who is looking for a new "twist" to add to your training program and willing to take a different approach.

* You’re a busy professional, mom, student, or someone who just wants to "get the workout over with" and still see results.

* You’re over 40′ish (Jon IS over 40 and an expert of fitness at this age and above) and have come to the realization you can no longer training like you were 20.

Plus…the program comes with 7 VIDEOS to help teach you this method for each body part which is pretty cool!

So with a program this far "out of the box", the decision will be up to you.

It DOES make my "recommended" list because there ARE some people who really need a short, but effective workout because they really don’t have much time on their hands.

Ok…bottom line…do "low carb" diets burn fat?

In a word?

YES!

A recent study of 87 long term studies have proven that when it comes to burning body fat, reducing your carb intake DOES work best.

BUT…

"Low carb" diets can be VERY frustrating for most people and hard to stick to.

As an experiment last year, I went 10 full days with ZERO carbohydrates.

I mean, not even a blade of GRASS in my diet…straight protein…not a single carb or gram of fat in sight.

I went INSANE! 

No, I don’t mean that "figuratively"…I mean I literally went INSANE!

I went from near sobbing fits over my computer not working properly to hysterical laughter at the thought of even undertaking such an experiment.

You see, your brain NEEDS carbs just to function properly so doing without any at all was an extreme example of how your body does need to get some carbs to function.

So here’s a tip from the "Muscle Nerd Looney Bin" on how to easily burn fat the "low carb" way from my Combat The Fat program ( http://www.combatthefat.com )…

>>  Separate "Dry" Carbs From "Wet" Carbs

This is a little twist I’ve created in Combat The Fat that allows you to EASILY reduce the WRONG kind of carbs WITHOUT counting calories and NEVER going hungry.

You need more carbs on training days to recover your muscle so you can consume 2-3 servings of "Dry Carbs" on those days (like oatmeal, pasta, bread, etc.)

"Wet Carbs" include most vegetables and fruits and don’t contain a lot of carbs so you can eat MUCH more of these each day.

Use them as "fillers" in your diet to keep from getting hungry and helping you avoid the real culprits…those "dry carbs".

I know this is a very different way of looking at "food" and doesn’t really follow the normal "low carb" pattern.

But it’s a glimpse of the way that I’VE structured the RIGHT way to use "low carb" to lose weight and forms one of the foundations of the Combat The Fat "Daily Eating Guide".

2 Safe (Yet ADVANCED) Deadlift Options For Building Mass

Deadlifts are thought of by many as the Grand Poo-Bah of all exercises. Along with Elvis, they share the title of “The King”, and it’s a classic when it comes to mass building!

Unfortunately, the deadlift has gotten an undeserved bad rap as lifters have come to believe it causes back injuries and lead to thick waists. Well, it’s true that the deadlift HAS caused many a blown disc (mine included!), but when done properly, the deadlift is no more risky than any other exercise.

The problem is…most guys are using horrible form just when they’re doing simple exercises like barbell curls!  So watching non-educated lifters go for a barbell deadlift, or worse…the STIFF LEGGED deadlift…well, it just makes my L2 and L3 vertebrae cringe with fear!  (If you know what that means, then you’ve probably tried an incorrect deadlift at some point in your life as well, eh? ;-)

But don’t worry…there is hope for you to use the power of the deadlift effectively to build mass without having to make your chiropractor any richer than he already is.

Here are 2 options that you AND your back are gonna love…but you’re legs are gonna HATE!

DUMBBELL DEADLIFTS

By using dumbbells instead of a barbell, you eliminate the unsafe “lean” forward that makes traditional deadlifts so tricky.

You simply hold two dumbbells (go heavy!) on each side of your body, letting them hang naturally at your sides with your arms straight.

Now, keeping your head erect and your back as straight as possible, bend your knees until your upper legs are at least parallel with the floor.  To finish the movement, push through the heels of your feet, raising your body until your legs are almost locked out, but do NOT lock out your knees!  This will keep the tension on your legs where it needs to be.

Knock out 8-15 reps with a controlled movement.

SEATED SHRUG MACHINE DEADLIFTS

This is one of my favorites that REALLY lets me go for power!

For this exercise, you’ll look around your gym for a machine that is meant to be used for “seated shoulder shrugs”.  (It has an adjustable seat with a handle on the bottom at each side connected to the bar where you would place the weight plates.  If you can’t find it, ask an attendant at the gym to guide you in.)

Now, either remove the seat or adjust it all the way down…you won’t be using it!

However you will be using the backrest as your guide as you bend down and grasp the bars at the bottom (same placement as you did with the dumbbells) and lift the weight up almost to full extension.  Keep a slow 4-count descent but don’t let the bars reach the point where they’re resting again.  Keep the tension on your legs and do 8-15 reps (or until you start to see your quadriceps start to burst through your skin).

Whatever style you prefer, don’t shy away from deadlifts. The classics are classics for a reason. You just can’t go wrong with them.
