Sarah,
Great research!
In writing a book on cancer prevention, I found alot to digest as well.

The one study that closed the argument for me was this. The amount of partially hydrogenated fat in a woman's buttock predicted her susceptibity to develop breast cancer in the future! ("Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention"). I would rather not be a study subject!

Glad you asked :) like I tell my trainees : "the only stupid question is the one you think is too stupid to ask".

OK, one hour cardio is already too much, optimal time is 30-45 minutes. If you're not seing any result from that, it could be an idea to increase the intensity. However, I would advise you to emphasize weight training over the pure cardio. I agree, going to the gym twice a day is not an option, you'll get over trained and totally sick of seeing the gym anyway :)

Suggest you do the following for a few weeks, to see how your body reacts to the change:

Weight training 3 days a week, cardio 3 days, rest one day.

Remember that MUSCLES are what gets your metabolism going. That's how you get your body to BURN THE FAT. You then give your muscles what they need to grow by feeding them the correct nutrients such as lean protein, whole complex carbs, fibrous carbs and healthy fats. Remember too to drink WATER all day long. It actually helps burn more fat, and your kidneys will love you for the constant flushing which eliminates the build-up of toxins. (You will, however, have to find bathrooms more often!)

You say you are 5'2" and 180 lbs. I would be curious to know your bodyfat percentage. I am 5'4" and 162lbs, with 18.87% bodyfat - goal 15% or less - at which time I will probably still weigh around 160 lbs due to adding muscle.

Muscle weighs the same as fat, obviously a pound is a pound, but the volume effect is totally different. Muscle is tighter and takes up less space than fat. You can drop 10 sizes and only 15 lbs total, because you have burned the fat away and replaced it with denser muscle tissue.

I'm mentionning this so you won't be alarmed at the scales not moving despite your efforts to "lose weight". You don't want to lose WEIGHT but FAT !

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!

Sarah -

I do my cardio in the morning every day for an hour but is that enough to lose body fat. I am incorporating weights this week along with the cardio but I don't feel like the cardio is working. Should I cut back on cardio and increase weights or increase both? I don't want to get burned out by going to the gym twice a day but might need to with my body type (5'2" and 180 "tight" pounds - not "flabby" pounds).

Thanks for all your help!
