Welcome, Blog Reader!

You may be on a quest for some good fitness sites, training advice, nutrition ideas; and stumbled across my blog. Why should you keep reading or listen to any of my advice? Let me introduce myself; that might help you decide that I actually have a clue as to what I’m talking about.

I was not one of those physically active kids growing up being a member of the local sports team or cheering when the teacher announced the gym-class as we wrote down the planners on the first day back at school. Reading was my thing, I had a very large library of all sorts of books, and my physical activity consisted of walking to and from school, to and from friends’ houses, and the one or two hours of gym we had to have as a part of the school program.

Yet I was fit and of “normal weight”, not even really chubby once I came into my teens; thanks to my mother’s naturally healthy cooking and portions. We never thought about either ingredients or portion control, but thinking back I know it was always pretty much right on the button.

However, as with a lot of people, life started happening. Upheavals, kids, break-ups, mental stress, even a depression, and as a result of it all, obesity. It may be hard to believe looking at me today, but I was obese 4 years ago, 93 kilos (or 205 lbs if you insist) and a whopping 46% bodyfat!

My scales said 46% - almost half of me was FAT? In total denial, I threw the scales in the trash J but that didn’t alter the fact that I had half my weight as yellow, disgusting, squishy, wobbly fat that wouldn’t fit into any clothes in normal stores!

To top it off, I found myself owner/manager of a gym. In that state, I wasn’t exactly very credible. It prompted me to looking for a program which would help me get in shape, and I did it. I inspired the members of my gym by dropping down to 68 kilos within 6 months (that’s 150 lbs by the way), they’d see me walking in the early morning as they headed for their commutes, and see me at the gym in the evening when they came to train. I know I helped many stay on track, and decided I’d get certified as a personal trainer - which I did.

I receive numerous programs and e-books through my association with www.atozfitness.com which is run by my husband, Lewis Wolk, and only those I feel are good enough, with sound and healthy approach, and that people can actually follow for the full extent of time; make it to our sites (blogs and main site).

In addition, I follow most of these programs myself, and tell you about how they feel in this blog; show you how I do, tell you what’s my challenge with them, which I prefer, which ones I enjoy enough to make them a part of my yearly cycle - and those I don’t like, well I’ll also tell you why I don’t. It could be that a great program just clashes with my personality but will be perfect for you.

Here is picture proof that I was obese and am now lean - not at my final goal yet, but I doubt I ever will be J goals have a way of changing as you reach them!

2006 - 93 kilos (205 lbs) and 46% bodyfat - I felt elegant that day

2008 - 63 kilos (139 lbs) and 17.5% bodyfat - getting there!

10 months separate these two photos …

Yes, I stumbled in 2007 and had to fight my way back, so I do understand the trouble others have with “life getting in the way” at some point.

I promise you that this blog will never promote anything that’s not sound, that could be dangerous or risky; not one gimmick, diet pill or gizmo has been used by me nor will I promote any - with a few exceptions made for natural supplements that can actually help you achieve your goals, but only if I have tried them myself first and can vouch for their safety and efficacy.

Enjoy browsing my blog, and I hope you’ll bookmark the page! You can also follow me on twitter!

PS, just so it’s said - I’ll be 50 in the early part of February 2009 - anyone with an ”I’m too old” excuse, think again. You’re never too old to be healthy and fit.

30th January 2008

Goals. Even crazy ones. Set them!

Where do you go without a goal?

Nowhere. And pretty fast too.

Actually, you end up getting nowhere faster without a goal, than to your destination with a goal.

In the case of fat loss, it’s back to "being" fat again. Yes Jon (Benson), I agree, no one is fat ;-) but we all say it anyway, untill we read your impecable reasoning that is.

But back to my goal, and lack thereof.

No goal after I got to my great 2006 goal, got me to an awful picture I won’t share until I’m back to where I want to be. Because, well, yuck.

New goal after I saw that pic! I made the goal I had for my wedding. 158 lbs goal, I got to 158.4 lbs. Good enough, that .4 could have been a little water that day, or maybe I added a little more lean mass than I figured on. Who cares.

Anyway. Christmas came. New Year. January. Know what that spells? Well, the wedding itself, we got chocolate gifts! Christmas, ditto! New Year, I placed the rest of them out on top of the garbage cans for the trash collectors to enjoy :) !!

January. My least favourite month. It’s dark, cold, miserable, long … light at the end of the tunnel: February. How is that a light? It’s still winter, still dark, and this year it’s got an extra day even! Yes, but the 6th is my birthday :) so I always looked forward to that. Now? Well, less. I’m not interested in the fatty and sweet birthday cake anymore. OK, this year, it’s on a Wednesday and it’s not a "round" number, so I’m going to just let it pass as a regular day, no frills, nothing.

However, I will insist on a treat though. Only it’ll wait till Saturday 9th and a brunch at a local breakfast place overlooking the water. I’ll have their excellent "crepeomelet" which is in fact a ham, spinach and cheese omelet wrapped in a crepe and with a sauce laddle of hollandaise sauce over it. Yes I know, totally "decadent", but …

By then I’ll have had 2 weeks with no treat/cheat, and by having this early in the day I have the rest of the day to burn it off. Much better than having a dinner with steak, baked potato, veggies and salad. Metabolism being slower in the evening, all that food will take forever to digest and end up where? In my digestive tract and some fat added someplace as well.

Besides, the worst of that dish is the sauce, and there’s not a whole lot of it. I have it with green tea, ice water, fruit … and very little adverse results.

But ok, what’s my new goal? What’s my deadline?

Ambitious?

Crazy?

Downright certifiable!!

132.3 lbs (which is an even 60 kilos) on June 1st 2008 of course, BF in mid teens.

From 160 lbs today and 23.85%

Nuts?

Told you.

Intermediate goal, just to break it down some, is 145 lbs on the first official day of spring, March 21st. BF lower 20s/upper teens.

And shorter term, is to get back into my 152lbs-jeans in 3 weeks.

Why 3 weeks?

Because the in-laws are off to Florida for 3 weeks, and we both want to meet up with them when they return with enough BF gone that they see it and have to comment!

We even plan on going to a nice store and pick out a new pair of jeans and maybe even a top as well to show it off even more. Well, I’ll only have those black jeans by then, everything else will be too big :)

First step?

All, and I mean every single one of my tops marked L (and even XL, why did I still have that?) are O-U-T. Well, they’re still here, but in a closed plastic bag, ready to go to charity. I do not want a single item of clothing that will be able to hide an "innertube" even if that innertube is now reduced to that of a bicycle!

No hiding. No camouflage. WYSIWYG all the way!

Last cheat dinner on Saturday (26th), I cut the chicken parmesan in half before I started eating. Split the pile of pasta in half as well. Pushed the two things over to one side of my plate. Ate the rest. Asked for a doggie-bag for the already separated extra food. "Good girl" :) but this meal was a lot worse than my planned post-birthday breakfast!

We went to a small, local restaurant. They have about 15-20 tables, 2-3 waiters, La Mama cooking and the son managing. Nice prices, good food, "small" portions. For a restaurant. But it’s still a double portion! Whether you go by the hand-measure or you’re able to estimate the weight on sight, the portion is in fact 2 portions! Why?

Darn it, sell half portions at half price, I’m sure they’d still make money.

Sad weather today. It’s just, only just above freezing, and it’s raining. Over night, it rained and froze, so you can imagine the skating conditions out there. This rain and milder now, may melt some of the piles of snow from December (mainly, we also got some more in January) and hopefully the ice from last night. Wind is picking up too I see. Even the fun-to-watch little squirrels aren’t out today, they’re holed up somewhere. Birds? Haven’t seen any since last evening before dusk. (and I just heard something fall over outside, blown over by the wind. Snow shovel I think).

ARE WE FULL OF CRAP ??? Looks that way …

I just got my hands on a review copy of Dr.Suzanne Gudakunst’s Top Secret Fat Loss Secrets.

If you want to check out her website and skip reading all the following go here

Now if you decide to read the rest of my review let me ask you something ?

Have any of you see an ad these last few days about a lady doctor that all other doctors would like to shut up for good?

Yes, as in kill, lol, but hopefully not literally!

The reason is that she wants to tell everyone why they have such a hard time losing weight.

Why that lower pooch never seems to want to go away.

Why even with low bodyfat, some still feel and look bloated.

Of course, diet doctors and those selling expensive pills and supplements don’t want the general public to know how to fix that problem themselves, because …

What would they get their income from then!?

Bankruptcy lurks!

Well, probably not. There are still a lot of people who prefer trying that "quick fix" remedy or running to a doctor because it makes it look like they are really making an effort with this overweight issue they have; when they’re really not doing anything at all.

So these people, supplement sellers and doctors, don’t really have anything to fear in my humble opinion.

Also, what this lady doctor is saying … would you believe I heard – or read – the same things in 1987?

Back then, it was wrapped in a hard-copy book and it was what you got for the price.

Period.

However, it did help me get the excess weight off, and in fact … 8 pounds more than I had bargained for!

This time, the book is an e-book.

And yes, by a different person.

The message is pretty much still the same, but there are some scary revelations and some pretty neat links to video clips and pictures really dotting the i’s of what she’s telling us.

Also a few links to a few self-tests that are not only fast and simple to do, but pretty darned accurate too!

I’ve been eating clean and exercising for years now, I’m pretty much in tune with what my body tells me, so when I took these tests, I could see that they were accurate as per what my body was already telling me.

This is why I can tell you that these tests are good enough for you to act upon once you’ve taken them, ok? No "hype" here, just some fun little tests that actually open your eyes.

Warning:  some of the pictures and videos are really graphic and pretty gross; however, it sometimes takes a real shock to make us react and actually act upon good information.

I know. We’ve been giving you a lot of new things lately. Jeff Anderson’s Combat the Fat, TheMuscleHead’s complete program  among others, and now this.

I honestly don’t want you to feel overwhelmed or confused, or thinking "what the h.. should I get out of all these?" because they are such totally different programs and systems … yet I know you are getting confused, overwhelmed, a little fed up even maybe?

I hope not, because all we really want to do is help YOU find the way out of the overweight, over fat rut and back to a healthy, lean body that nature intended you to have!

This is pretty hefty stuff.

I mean … pictures of people picking their poop out of the toilet to show how efficient this system is in ridding them of the excesses that are blocking their insides.

Videos of parasitic organisms living inside a human body … not what you want to see when you’re wolfing down a sandwich over your computer!

But hey, it wakes you up, makes you pay attention, take action.

You clean up your nutrition and get your back side off the couch, and start taking responsibility for your own life, your own body!

Honestly?

No one has ever put this information out in this manner (as far as I know) and in a language accessible to people like you and me.

Maybe this is the kick in the butt that you need?

I know it surprised me!, and I’ve already read something very similar (but less graphic).

At least, check out her information page here –> http://snipurl.com/topfatlossatoz

If that doesn’t peak your curiosity and interest, I’d be surprised.

I know one thing: this has made me determined to be even healthier and cleaner than before, because frankly … yuck!

And … it’s perfectly compatible with the Every Other Day Diet  that I am not abandoning, and the weight training program of my choice.

It’s really a terrific addition to the extensive knowledge we gain on the human body by reading the books from these natural bodybuilders who do us all the great service of sharing in what they know works for those who need and want to burn excess bodyfat and build lean muscles!

So don’t delay and check out Dr. Suzanne’s website and get your body cleaned out this weekend.

Mobile phones and your health

This is not new.  There are numerous reports and counter reports on the dangers and non-dangers of using a cell phone. However, the following experiment says a lot more than mere scientific reports. Have a look:

This should be shown to all children and teenagers

1 Egg
2 Mobiles
65 minutes of connection between mobiles.

We assembled two mobile phones facing eachother with a raw, whole egg placed between them.

Initiated the call between the two mobiles and allowed 65 minutes approximately…
During the first 15 minutes nothing happened;
25 minutes later the egg started getting hot;
45 minutes later the egg is hot;
65 minutes later the egg is cooked.

The egg was hard-cooked and could be peeled easily and eaten.

Conclusion:
The immediate radiation of the mobiles has the potential to modify the proteins of the egg. Imagine what it can do with the proteins of your brains when you do long calls.

Please try to reduce long time calls on mobile phones and pass this information to all your friends you care for.

Now, who is going to get an ear-bud a.s.a.p.? Or dig theirs out of the drawer it ended up in? My main problem with those things, is to get them to even stay in/on my ear; and to find the answer-button when somone calls me. And I never stay on the phone for as long as even 25 minutes, but I suppose I’ll make an effort – or insist anyone who wants to contact me uses sms!

Training this week has been going well. I have deleted almost every single e-mail I’ve been bombarded with from a number of unknown experts who are basically all saying the same thing, but with their own twist so that they seem to have something different to tell me. Do cardio early, do it later; do a long, slow sessio, do a short, fast one; forget it altogether and train only with weights. OK, weights … heavy weights, low reps, no low weights many reps! ENOUGH!!!

Think about it. We have all at some point in time been lean(ish) and in decent shape. Think back to that time. How did you live then? And I mean every detail!! How did you eat, what exercise did you do, did you walk or bike more because you didn’t have a car? Did you eat more fresh foods because the ready-to-cook things were too expensive? Did you lift weights or participate in a sport or other physical activity? Write it all down.

Then look at your life today. How do you eat and train now? Is there a direct relation between your present habits and the weight you carry? Can you get back to the way you lived when you were in shape?

I’ve been engaged in this personal mental exercise for some time now, which is what led me to erasing all the excess information I know I don’t need! I felt an utter swamping of my mental capacities at absorbing any more information or versions of the same information.

You declutter your cabinets, closets, desk, computer … but forget your brain! Declutter it. Get back to the basics. You know what worked for you before. It can work for you again. Along the way, you have picked up some worthwhile information you can add to the old plan, but mainly there’s a lot of un-needed clutter in there!

I know what I did when I got to the lowest weight I’d ever been as an adult (32 in fact) and the only thing I will add to that is some weight training. Everything else was fine and it worked! I felt great. The doctors were disgusted (they couldn’t find any reasons to prescribe me anything, lol) when I even saw one!

So yes, I’m sitting here with a good old notebook and a pen, and I’m thinking, planning and changing the way I’m doing some things from now on. Back to the 1987 newly discoverd plan that changed my life around as far as being lean and healthy.

I will tell you what that is in due time, but for now I just want you to sit down and take a mental journey of your own, remember how you lived when you were at your best. See how you can get back to that. If you feel you were never "best" then … wait for the revelation coming this summer in whole. There will be tid-bits in the mean time, but I’m not giving it all away :) gotta be able to butter my whole wheat toast, lol.

Are you part of the minority or the majority?

I was curious to see which countries were immediately following the USA on the world obesety statistics.

Have a look and see where your contry fits in, and then see whether you are part of the  non-obese population  or the obese one. Remember that the limit here is a BMI of 30, which is way higher than a healthy number anyway.

BMI is not an ideal measure, as it doesn’t take into consideration your body composition. A lean bodybuilder with 6-9% bodyfat will easily come in with a BMI of over 30 because it is only calculated from total weight and height. However, most people are not bodybuilders, or even with bodyfat as low as 10% for men and 15% for women, so the "average" person can use the BMI calculations for a pretty close estimate of their health status.

I found this list interesting and a little surprising for a couple of countries (good surprises except Mexico).

DEFINITION: Percentage of total population who have a BMI (body mass index) greater than 30 Kg/sq.meters (Data for Australia, Austria and Portugal is from 2002. All other data is from 2003). Obesity rates are defined as the percentage of the population with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30. The BMI is a single number that evaluates an individual’s weight status in relation to height (weight/height2, with weight in kilograms and height in metres). For Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, figures are based on health examinations, rather than self-reported information. Obesity estimates derived from health examinations are generally higher and more reliable than those coming from self-reports, because they preclude any misreporting of people’s height and weight. However, health examinations are only conducted regularly in a few countries (OECD).

3 weeks … are you still working on your resolutions?

3 weeks since New Year’s Eve already. Time flies, even in the dead of winter with storms, snowfall and rain.

I’m sure you are like many others, you have made resolutions for the New Year. Only, it’s not so new anymore. You have fallen into the "rut" of commute-work-commute-home/TV-sleep and repeat again. Not all of you, I know there are those who sat down, thought this through, wrote precise, positive goals and strong, powerful reasons why they wanted to achieve those goals. You are sticking to the promises you made yourself 3 weeks ago.

But the rest of you … fall of the wagon already? Or do you simply feel that you don’t know how to aproach this whole fatloss/ weight training thing? Well, I’d like you to take a look at a review I did for a brand new product from Australia.

http://www.atozfitness.com/musclehead-review.html

No, it’s not from the US for once! It seems that Australia is the 3rd fattest country in the world now. Wow right? We all have that image of the tanned Aussie on the beach, lean and muscular, the ladies lean and "toned" (I hate that word, it means nothing at all), a little like we all saw the Californians some years ago. Well, all great things come to an end (look at the Romans, the ancient Greek and Egyptians, the Mayas …) . But the image is still in our heads, and we can get that body that the Bondi Beach Aussies and the California Americans had (and some still have, make no mistake about it, it’s just not the majority anymore).

Like I say in my review http://www.atozfitness.com/musclehead-review.html this program gives you everything, from the basic information on how to set goals, how a muscle works, why it gets bigger and stronger, why you should stay away from steroids, a full workout program at your level of fitness, recipes, software programs …

I have used day one of the 4-day split today. The workout is printed on a sheet of paper, split into the 4 days I chose as small tables, each containing the name of the exercise to do, the number of sets, and the number of reps expected to be achieved for each set. All I had to do, was fill in the weight I was using and follow the list. Simple, and just as easy or hard as I want it to be by chosing the appropriate weights.

So it’s still January. So February is a bummer-month transitioning between winter and spring but mainly on the winter side of the specter. And March isn’t much better either!  OK, we have 9 weeks exactly before official spring day March 21st. How many pounds will you have shed by then? 9, 18, or 0? I’m aiming for 15.
